Nostalgia lovers and animation enthusiasts are in for a rude awakening as Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform, Max, prepares to purge a slew of classic Cartoon Network shows. Titles like “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy” and “Ed, Edd n Eddy” are among those slated for removal, leaving fans to lament the dwindling availability of their childhood favorites, according to reports.
This latest purge follows a series of blows to Cartoon Network’s legacy under Warner Bros. Discovery. Last year, the company shut down the Cartoon Network website and closed its Burbank studio, signaling a shift away from the network’s traditional presence. While Warner Bros. has announced new projects and spin-offs based on popular Cartoon Network properties, the removal of these classic shows from Max raises concerns about the future of the network’s legacy content.
Shows Facing the Axe
According to reports, the following shows are set to disappear from Max:
- The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
- Ed, Edd n Eddy
- Teen Titans (2003)
- The Looney Tunes Show (2011)
- Static Shock
- Green Lantern (animated series)
Once these titles are removed, the only remaining classic Cartoon Network shows on Max will be “Courage the Cowardly Dog” and the original “Powerpuff Girls” (1998). Some newer titles, like “Adventure Time,” will remain on the platform.
A History of Content Removal
This isn’t the first time Cartoon Network has been impacted by content removals on Max. In 2022, “Infinity Train” was pulled, prompting criticism from the show’s creator. Other popular titles like “Uncle Grandpa,” “OK K.O.! – Let’s Be Heroes,” “Steven Universe,” “Ben 10,” “The Regular Show,” and “The Amazing World of Gumball” have also been removed.
Industry Challenges and Potential for Change
The animation industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including studio closures, budget cuts, and the increasing use of AI. Warner Bros. Discovery’s cost-cutting measures have contributed to these difficulties, with the Cartoon Network website shutdown attributed to revenue loss and declining viewership.
However, there are signs of positive change. A recent deal between The Animation Guild and studios secured wage increases and addressed concerns about AI utilization. Additionally, the animation genre continues to thrive, with successful films like “Moana 2” and shows like “Bluey” demonstrating the enduring appeal of animation.
Where to Watch
While the removal of these shows from Max is disappointing, fans can still find them on other platforms. For now, they remain available on Max, giving viewers a chance to catch up before they disappear.
