Amazon has launched a new Fire TV Stick HD aimed at budget-conscious consumers. Priced at $35, this streaming stick offers an affordable way to access popular streaming services, but it comes with some notable compromises compared to its 4K counterparts.

What’s New:

  • Upgraded Remote: The new model includes a remote with TV controls, allowing users to adjust volume, power on/off their TV, and mute directly from the Fire TV remote vs the older HD Fire TV Sticks.

Drawbacks:

  • Slower Performance: The Fire TV Stick HD has a slower processor and older Wi-Fi 5 compared to the faster Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E found in the Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max.
  • HD Only: As the name suggests, this stick is limited to HD streaming, missing out on the sharper visuals of 4K resolution.
  • No Dolby Vision: Unlike the 4K models, the HD stick doesn’t support Dolby Vision, a technology that enhances picture quality with higher dynamic range and wider color gamut.

Should You Buy It?

Cord Cutters News recommends considering the Fire TV Stick 4K even if you currently have an HDTV. The 4K model offers better performance, future-proofs your setup for a 4K TV upgrade, and is only $15 more expensive. However, if price is the absolute deciding factor and 4K isn’t a concern, the Fire TV Stick HD still provides a decent streaming experience.

Other Important Notes:

  • The Fire TV Stick HD replaces both the older Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite in the United States.
  • Amazon is discontinuing the older model HD Fire TV Sticks.

Overall, the new Fire TV Stick HD offers a basic but functional streaming experience at an affordable price. However, its limitations compared to the 4K models make it a less attractive option for those who prioritize performance and future-proofing.
