T-Mobile is hoping to expand its 5G Home Internet in rural America. First spotted by Policyband, the second largest wireless carrier in the United States, plans to use its acquisition of UScelluar to expand its fixed wireless access, according to the company’s FCC filings.
Currently, T-Mobile serves over 125.9 million customers under its T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, and Ultra Mobile brands. T-Mobile spent $4.4 billion to buy UScelluar and its brands that service 4.5 million customers across portions of 21 states in various geographies. The acquisition would give T-Mobile a larger footprint in rural areas, in which approximately 40 percent of UScelluar customers are covered. The deal between the two companies included a master license to more than 2,000 towers owned by UScellular.
While describing the benefits of the transaction, T-Mobile posted:
- The Transaction Will Improve Service to Rural Areas for Customers of Both Companies. Combining the acquired UScellular spectrum and assets with those of T-Mobile will result in an enhanced user experience and faster and better 5G service for the rural customers of both companies.
- The Transaction Will Expand Availability of T-Mobile’s Home Internet Service,
Particularly in Rural Areas. The capacity increases resulting from the Transaction will
allow T-Mobile to expand the availability of its successful in-home broadband service by
over [REDACTED] households in UScellular’s footprint—more than half of which are
located in rural areas—and increase by approximately [REDACTED] the overall number of
households that can be supported by T-Mobile Home Internet in those areas.
Notably, T-Mobile claims that the transaction will increase competition and “will result in greater and better competitive choices for all customers in the UScellular’s footprint.”
The FCC will decide if the merger will move forward.
