Starz is most known for its original TV shows like Outlander, Black Sails, and Power, but their streaming service actually carries a strong library of movies – especially pre 1980s, an area many of their competitors suffer. There is a free trial available if you want to test the service.

What are some of the best films on Starz? Let’s dive in.

If you’re not a subscriber, the Starz streaming service costs $8.99 a month as a standalone app, and is available as an add-on for most live TV streaming services.

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood (Comedy/drama)

Set in Hollywood in the late 1960s, this movie follows a washed up actor and his stunt double in a world that’s leaving them behind. Dotted with real-life locations and characters, this is a love letter to Hollywood’s past, but also commentary on its present.

Why stream it?

This is often called Tarantino’s most personal film, and like a lot of his productions, the cinematography, costume design, the soundtrack, and the production value all make it worth watching.

Schindler’s List (Drama)

This film regularly makes “Top 10 Greatest Films of All Time” lists, so inclusion here is a given. If you’re not familiar, it tells the story of a man named Oskar Schindler – a Nazi who becomes disillusioned with his party and ultimately saves the lives of more than 1,000 Jews during the Holocaust.

Why stream it?

It’s one of the most powerful films ever made by one of the most iconic directors to ever create a film. There’s no denying that this isn’t an easy film to watch, but the story of heroism in the face of absolute evil and horror is worth your time.

Coraline (Animation/Family)

From the producer of The Nightmare Before Christmas, this is a stop motion film that tells a beautifully dark tale. Coraline is a young girl who discovers a secret door in her home that leads to a world that’s similar, but seemingly better than her own. When her “other mother” tries to keep Coraline in this world permanently though, the happiness quickly unravels. I did categorize this movie as “family” but it’s frightening at times and likely not suitable for the youngest viewers.

Why stream it?

It’s a wonderfully creative film that really is unlike anything else. This is a dark story but it’s so imaginative, it’s a must see. Coraline is worth seeing for the landscapes and character design alone.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Romance/Sci-Fi)

What if you could literally erase bad memories? That’s the premise of this movie starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. After a particularly bad breakup, a woman decides to erase memories of her ex, and he in turn does the same. When the couple keeps falling in love though and repeating the procedure, things get complicated.

Why stream it? Many people say this is perhaps the best performance of Jim Carrey’s career, and the fact that it’s a derivation from his standard comedy makes it even better. This film is at times thought-provoking, at times heartbreaking and at times funny.

The Omen (Horror)

An absolute classic horror flick, this film defines the “frightening thing that’s unseen” genre. It centers on a family who, after a series of mysteriously evil events befalls their household, realizes their young son may be the antichrist.

Why stream it?

Because it’s the best of the 70s horror movies and it still holds up very well. It’s a horror movie that lacks fore, but is absolutely packed with suspense.

For A Few Dollars More (Western)

I couldn’t mention the pre-1980s catalog of Starz without including one of those titles on this list. Perhaps the strongest part of the library here is classic Western films, and this sequel to Fistful of Dollars is one of those rare films that’s better than the original. The plot in all these old Western hardly matters, but just for the sake of sharing, it follows a pair of bounty hunters (Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef) tracking down “El Indio,” notorious outlaw.

Why stream it?

Clint. Eastwood.
