35-40% of Sling TV, Hulu, DIRECTV NOW, PlayStation Vue, Etc Subscribers Also Pay for Cable TV

Male hand holding TV remote control.Today at the Pay-TV show the research group TDG reported that 35-40% of live TV subscribers say they also pay for traditional cable TV services. This means that as many as 40% of all of Sling TVs, DIRECTV NOWs, and PlayStation Vue’s subscribers also pay for cable TV.

TDG also reported that 8.4 million Americans subscribe to a live TV streaming service like Sling TV and PlayStation Vue.

So why are so many Americans pay for both a streaming service? We don’t know but it is very possible many of these dual subscribers are paying for both as they consider cord cutting. Others may be paying for a streaming service on top of their cable TV service to get access to the content they can get cheaper with streaming vs a more expensive cable TV channel.

The real fear here for cable TV executives is that this means the number of new cord cutters who are going directly to on-demand services vs a live TV service is even higher than first reported.
