I have been a cord cutter for more than 10 years and have learned a lot in that time. So that raised the question of what I would do differently in 2024 if I cut the cord today. Here are the top three things I would remind myself.

#1 Do Not Make Cord Cutting like Cable TV

One of the main mistakes a lot of cord cutters make is trying to replicate cable TV. Let’s be honest, you’re ditching cable because of the high cost and unneeded content. Approach cord cutting with an open mind—it won’t be just like cable TV.

#2 Do Look for Shows Not Channels

Often new cord cutters look for TV channels instead of shows they want. For example, if you love a popular show for kids on the Disney Channel, you may think you need a live TV service to watch it. Instead, consider Disney+. A live TV service can cost $70 a month, but Disney+ is a fraction of that price. Both services will give you the same show, but one costs a lot more.

NOTE: If you are not a sports fan, a live TV service is most likely not needed.

#3 Take Your Time

Don’t rush into it. The temptation to save money is huge to just be done with cable TV. I would remind myself to slow down and to do as much research as possible first. Test out the services and make sure you can get the shows you want before canceling cable. Don’t sign up for everything at the same time.

Cord cutting is a bit like buying a new car. Your new car works like your old car, but everything is slightly different. The radio offers the same channels, but you control them differently. With cord cutting, you can get the same content, but everything is a little different from what you had with cable. The good news is in just a few weeks, you will learn how the new remote works and where to find your favorite TV shows.
