This week Fubo ended support for some older Samsung smart TVs. If you own a 2015 or 2016 Samsung smart TV and you used the built-in Fubo app, you may have found an error message when you opened it up. That comes as Fubo has ended support for 2015 and 2016 smart TVs.
If you are impacted by this change and still want access to Fubo you will need to switch over to a streaming player like Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, or Google TV to continue to access Fubo on your TV.
This all comes as last month, Fubo quietly launched its much anticipated free streaming service. Now, past customers can watch 170+ free ad-supported channels with on-demand content without needing to sign up for a paid version of Fubo.
The one catch of this service is that Fubo will require you to have an account to access the content. Once you log in, when it asks you if you want to sign up, you can select a free option at the bottom as a former Fubo customer. Unlike Sling TV, for example, it lets anyone access its free content even if you are not a customer, according to Fubo’s help page that launched today that was first spotted by The Streamable.
Recently, Fubo has slowly been adding free content to its lineup of channels. Now, Fubo offers over 170 free ad-supported channels.
Unlike Sling TV and Philo, two live TV streaming services with a free ad-supported plan, Fubo does not offer a DVR.
This all comes as this week Philo launched a free ad-supported streaming service also. Philo will offer free channels and most of them will be able to be DVRed for free. No credit card needed to use this new free service and DVR.
“Another way we have been working to bring more value to our subscribers is by expanding the catalog of free channels we offer as part of Philo. We currently have a curated selection of 70+ free channels — from reality to music, news to classic TV — with more to be added over time. What’s new is that users will now be able to sign up to watch and record a majority of free channels without being a Core subscriber or providing a credit card. Whether someone’s not ready to make the jump to Core or is simply taking a break, we still want to provide them with a wide selection of great shows and movies.” Philo said in a statement on its website.
Both Fubo and Philo seem to be hoping that these free services will keep past customers using the app with the hope that they will once again resubscribe. The longer they use the app the more likely they are to resubscribe.
