Have you noticed cable TV bills continue to increase? Did you also notice the number of channels in some of these packages have decreased?
Most noticeably, Comcast has been moving some sports channels to more expensive packages with some of its RSNs. This has resulted in Bally Sports dropping Comcast as it fights with them to keep its RSNs on cheaper packages.
Although Spectrum dropped multiple Disney-owned channels including Disney Jr, Freeform, and FXX last year, the price increased twice.
Mntn Research pointed out that the number of channels has slowly been dropping but the price of the channels has slowly been rising.
Look for this trend to continue as it is expected that many small cable TV networks will shut down in the future. This summer the seven Pac-12 Network channels will be shutting down.
As Americans switch to on-demand streaming the viewership for channels dedicated to older shows with only reruns has dropped. This is leaving many executives wondering if the cost of channels like MTV 2 is worth the limited viewership.
By dropping some channels and charging the same amount cable networks get more money for their more popular channels. This is likely a trend we will see continuing for years to come as cable tries to find ways to remain profitable.
