YouTube TV Update Now Allows Subscribers to Pick DVRed or On-Demand Versions of Shows on Some Channels

YouTube TV offers a great 9-month DVR, but there are a few catches. If you record a show and an on-demand version of the show is there it replaces your DVRed version with the on-demand version. This on-demand version has unskippable ads.

Recently YouTube TV quietly updated several networks to allow you to pick the on-demand or the DVRed version.

Not all networks let you pick. Many, especially broadcast networks like CBS, still force the on-demand version if it is available. Though a growing number of channels now offer the ability to pick between on-demand and DVRed shows.

So why force ads? It helps keep the price down. When you only charge $40 a month and offer a good selection of channels along with a 9-month DVR you have to earn that cost back. By having ads it allows services like YouTube TV to keep prices low but still offer a lot of content and features.
