YouTube TV Loses Another Cable TV Network Amid Contract Disputes

In a significant blow to sports fans in the Washington, D.C. region, YouTube TV has announced that it will no longer carry the Monumental Sports Network, effective September 30, 2025. The regional sports network, which serves as the primary broadcaster for the Washington Wizards of the NBA and the Washington Capitals of the NHL, was removed from the streaming service’s lineup after negotiations between YouTube TV and Monumental Sports failed to produce a new carriage agreement. The decision leaves subscribers without access to live games and other programming related to these teams, prompting frustration among local sports enthusiasts.

The announcement came through an email sent to YouTube TV subscribers, emphasizing the company’s efforts to secure a fair deal with Monumental Sports over recent weeks. Despite these attempts, the two parties could not reach terms, resulting in the immediate removal of the network’s content from the platform. This includes not only live game broadcasts but also any recorded programs previously stored in subscribers’ libraries. The loss of Monumental Sports Network is particularly impactful for fans in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas, where the Wizards and Capitals enjoy a loyal following.

YouTube TV sought to soften the blow by highlighting that subscribers can still access many nationally broadcast NBA and NHL games through other channels included in the service’s base subscription. These games, often aired on networks like ESPN, TNT, or NBCSN, provide some coverage of the Wizards and Capitals when they play in high-profile matchups. However, this does little to replace the comprehensive local coverage provided by Monumental Sports, which includes regular-season games, pre- and post-game shows, and exclusive team-related content not available on national broadcasts.

As an alternative, YouTube TV pointed subscribers toward Monumental+, a standalone streaming service offered directly by Monumental Sports. This service allows fans to access the same regional content previously available through YouTube TV, though it requires an additional subscription. The suggestion has drawn mixed reactions, as it places an extra financial burden on viewers who already pay for YouTube TV’s service, which is marketed as a comprehensive live TV solution.

The email also reminded subscribers that they can cancel their YouTube TV membership at any time, a nod to the flexibility offered to family managers of accounts. While YouTube TV expressed appreciation for its members, the loss of Monumental Sports Network could prompt some subscribers to reconsider their options, especially those for whom local sports coverage is a primary reason for subscribing. The development underscores the ongoing challenges in the streaming industry, where disputes over carriage fees and content rights continue to disrupt access to popular programming.
