YouTube TV Is More Popular Than Philo, PlayStation Vue, DIRECTV NOW, and Sling TV with Cord Cutters

One of the most common questions we get is what is the most popular live TV streaming service for cord cutters. That is a hard question to answer. The main issue is that just looking at subscriber numbers would indicate that Sling TV is the most popular followed by Hulu/YouTube TV. Yet studies have shown that up to 40% of live TV streaming service subscribers also pay for cable TV.

So, we asked over 3,000 cord cutters what live TV streaming service they use and according to their answers, YouTube TV is the most popular live TV streaming service.

Here is how our readers voted:

• YouTube TV: 18%
• Philo: 12.1%
• Sling TV: 12%
• DIRECTV NOW: 11.3%
• PlayStation Vue: 7.8%
• Hulu with live TV: 7.3%

This survey was conducted in late June 2019.

A few interesting things jumped out. First, Sling TV has the most live TV subscribers according to the numbers we have available, but YouTube TV was the clear winner.

Maybe what was most surprising was that DIRECTV NOW still has more subscribers than PlayStation Vue. Recently the news has been that DIRECTV NOW subscribers have been dropping the service following a recent price hike. That does seem to be true as it has dropped in recent surveys but it still is outperforming PlayStation Vue.

The one service that seems to be shockingly low in Hulu. Even though the list clearly broke out options for Hulu on-demand and Hulu live TV, it is possible that many who subscribe to Hulu with live TV just selected the Hulu on-demand option. Yet the same thing could be said about YouTube TV as many could have just selected YouTube artificially lowering its live TV streaming service popularity.
