YouTube TV is Bringing Picture in Picture to iOS

YouTube TV is finally working on extending its picture in picture feature to iOS devices including iPhones and iPads. YouTube chief product officer Neal Mohan confirmed the upcoming update to The Verge.

While there isn’t an exact date for the update yet, Mohan told The Vergecast that YouTube TV subscribers would get the feature “hopefully in the next few months.”

Here’s how YouTube TV describes the feature:

Picture-in-picture shrinks the video into a small player that you can move around your home screen and position over other apps. You can continue watching YouTube TV while using other apps on your mobile device with this feature turned on. The video will shrink into a PiP window, which can be dragged to different parts of the screen. This will allow playback to continue on top of other apps.

Until the feature is available on iOS devices, iPad uses can turn on split screen to use other apps while watching TV. You can learn more about multitasking on your iPad here.

Along with the picture in picture feature, Mohan filled The Verge in on some other updates, including support for surround sound which is currently limited to just a handful of devices. “The rollout of that feature has certainly been a lot slower than I would’ve liked,” Mohan said of the surround sound availability, noting that he hopes for a wider rollout in the next six months.
