At the time YouTube was not pushing the new legal free moves. At first, it seemed that YouTube wanted to test the waters with the new service. Now YouTube is doubling down with an aggressive social media push promoting the new free legal movies.
The growth of ad-supported streaming services has really taken off as advertisers take notice of the opportunities streaming offers. Walmart and Roku have both recently launched free services joining Pluto TV, Tubi, and Sony Crackle.
Since launch, YouTube has been fighting unofficial uploads of popular movies and TV shows. By offering legal options of movies like Rocky, YouTube could help cut back on piracy. This would also help both YouTube and the content companies make money on YouTube content.
