YouTube Shorts Get Longer: Creators Can Soon Upload Up to 3 Minutes of Content But Cracks Down on Copyrighted Content

YouTube announced today that it is increasing the maximum length for Shorts, its short-form video platform, from 60 seconds to 3 minutes. This change, effective October 15, 2024, comes in response to creator feedback and aims to provide more flexibility for storytelling and content creation.

The platform emphasizes that this update will not affect existing Shorts. Videos uploaded before October 15th will remain as they are, even if they are in a vertical format. However, any new Shorts uploaded after this date can be up to 3 minutes long, offering creators a wider canvas for their ideas.

This move comes with a few caveats:

This expansion of YouTube Shorts reflects the growing popularity of short-form video content and positions YouTube to better compete with platforms like TikTok, which already allows for longer videos. It will be interesting to see how creators leverage this increased freedom and what new forms of creativity emerge on the platform.

YouTube encourages creators to stay updated on these changes and other platform news through the YouTube Creators channel and Help Center.
