YouTube Rolls Out ‘YouTube Shorts’ as its Answer to Tik Tok

YouTube just launched YouTube Shorts, a feature that allows users to upload videos 15 seconds or less. If it sounds a little bit like Tik Tok, that’s because it is. The new feature first launching in India has a whole set of creator tools like slow motion and multi-segment camera options designed “for creators and artists who want to shoot short, catchy videos using nothing but their mobile phones.”

Users will also be able to set their YouTube Shorts to music, with an “in-product music picker feature.” A YouTube spokesperson told The Verge it “currently has 100,000s of tracks, and we’re working with music artists, labels and publishers to make more of their content available to continue expanding our catalog.”

Tik Tok has taken the video app world by storm this year despite its troubled fate that hangs in the balance with threats of being banned. But YouTube and other social media platforms have jumped on the short video wagon to launch their own versions of the Vine-like app. Instagram now has Reels, which is essentially Tik Tok for people who don’t want to download Tik Tok.

YouTube Shorts is currently rolling out in Beta testing on Android in India where the Chinese-owned Tik Tok app is currently banned. iOS compatibility will follow soon.
