YouTube Is Rolling Out a Dark Mode on Android

Back in March, YouTube announced a new dark theme for mobile and rolled it out to iOS. This new dark theme replaces the typical white background with a dark background that many have been asking for.

According to Tech Crunch, the dark theme on YouTube for Android is in the early phases of a gradual roll out. The update may still take a few weeks to reach your device. When you get the update, you will be able to find it in the Settings on your YouTube app.

A dark theme was first announced and rolled out on YouTube’s desktop website. Many wanted the dark background to make nighttime YouTube viewing easier on the eyes. Many have complained about jumping from a dark video to a bright white screen was hard on the eyes when they watch videos in the dark.

YouTube already uses a dark theme as the default theme for most YouTube apps on TVs. Roku and Android TV both have their apps set to a dark theme by default.

This change also comes as YouTube rolls out an adaptive video player that expands to fit your screen. Now if you are on a large screen YouTube’s player will appear larger than it does on a smaller laptop screen.
