YouTube is Launching a Book Club Series and More Learning Content

YouTube back on October 17th started off a new book club series, named BookTube.

The format of the new series will be similar to the platform’s Michelle Obama special, with authors discussing their books with YouTube creators. Malcolm Gladwell will be the first author to appear on the series, discussing his new book Talking to Strangers. Margaret Atwood will be next up, along with James Patterson and Melinda Gates.

Variety reports that this is one step in effort for YouTube to invest in “learning content” rather than scripted content.

“We’re committed to empowering both the creators who want to share their knowledge with the world and the users who come to our platform to learn — from home improvements to the basics of physics to grammar lessons,” said Malik Ducard, YouTube’s VP of content partnerships.

Here’s a trailer for the new series.

Look for more learning content from YouTube beginning this month. Glad You Asked, a series from Vox Media Studios, began on October 8th. The School of… also launched on October 8th and comes from the YouTube channel The School of Life which answers philosophical topics.

On October 21st, Could You Survive the Movies looks at popular movies, looks at movie scenarios like time traveling cars and what would happen if you entered the Jumanji game. Mindfield Fear Special, with demonstrations of the effect of fear on the brain, launches October 24th.
