In a significant move to broaden its subscription offerings, YouTube announced today that it is expanding its Premium Lite pilot to users in the United States, introducing a more affordable way to enjoy most videos ad-free for just $7.99 per month. The expansion marks the first time U.S. viewers can access this tier, which has been in testing in select markets. In the coming weeks, YouTube will also roll out Premium Lite to all users in its current pilot countries—Thailand, Germany, and Australia—further widening its reach.
The launch comes as YouTube celebrates a milestone: its YouTube Music and Premium services have surpassed 125 million subscribers globally, including trial users. Since introducing these paid plans, YouTube has aimed to cater to diverse viewer preferences, and Premium Lite represents the latest evolution in that strategy. Priced lower than the full Premium plan, which includes ad-free music, offline playback, and background play, Premium Lite targets users who primarily want to ditch ads on videos—whether they’re watching gaming streams, comedy sketches, cooking tutorials, or educational content—without needing the extra bells and whistles.
YouTube says they hope this new cheaper Premium option will be a boon for creators and partners. YouTube emphasized that both tiers generate additional revenue streams, supporting the platform’s vast ecosystem of content makers. With offerings ranging from scripted dramas and podcasts to live gaming streams, YouTube remains a one-stop shop for entertainment, and Premium Lite ensures fewer interruptions for subscribers enjoying their favorite channels.
The U.S. rollout begins today, with users gradually gaining access to sign up via the YouTube app or website. Meanwhile, the full deployment in Thailand, Germany, and Australia will follow over the next few weeks, making the service universally available in those markets beyond the pilot phase. Looking ahead, YouTube plans to bring Premium Lite to more countries throughout 2025, alongside new features to enhance its subscription plans.
