You’ll Need an Invite To Get SpaceX’s New Next-Generation Starlink Dish

SpaceX introduced its new Starlink terminal last week, but it might be a while before you can purchase it.

The spacecraft manufacturer said the Starlink Standard kit is only available by invitation to “a small group of early customers in the U.S..” Starlink’s support page said potential customers should keep an eye out for updates on the “wider release” of the dish, but it’s unclear when the invite-only period will end.

In July, SpaceX sent out invitations for select users to try the Wi-Fi 6-supported Gen 3 router, which comes with the Standard kit, but it would cost them $200.

SpaceX owner Elon Musk’s internet endeavor has had a rocky start, having only just achieved a breakeven cash flow this month. The service became more accessible after the company removed its waitlist earlier this year.

The new terminal is another step forward in Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet offerings, but potential customers could still be reluctant depending on the new dish’s price tag. Because the new kit bundles the Gen 3 router and new hardware, it’s not likely to be cheaper than Starlink’s other offerings. For context, Starlink’s current residential hardware costs $599, not including the $120 a month subscription.

The Starlink Standard dish was designed or everyday uses like gaming, video calls, and streaming. The terminal features a slimmer, more portable design, higher waterproof and wind resistance rating as well as an increased field of view, and no motor. In addition to the terminal, kickstand, and cables, the kit includes a Gen 3 router with Wi-Fi 6 support.

In addition to its Standard and Standard Actuated terminals, Starlink offers High Performance and Flat High-Performance terminals.

SpaceX wasn’t immediately available for comment.
