We first heard that WWE was planning to update its streaming app with a free option back in September 2019. A that time, it was announced that there would be three subscription tiers: a free tier with content previously available separately from premium content, a regular paid tier for the basic WWE package, and a premium tier with additional content and features.
The free tier launched today and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it is not be ad-supported at launch. Jayar Donlan, Executive VP of advanced media at WWE, told THR that WWE sees the free version as “a balance of providing a great experience for our fans by essentially offering unlimited access to a larger array of programming while still maintaining the value of our more premium content at $9.99 per month.”
In March, WWE announced that it would make a large collection of content free for a limited time. Unlocking the content gave fans who were stuck at home the ability to watch past Wrestlemania events, Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, the Survivor Series, NXT TakeOver, docuseries, and more. As the WWE continues to explore options for streaming partnership deals, the introduction of the new free tier of the app will help to keep fans entertained.
