We’ve reported on the rumors and possibilities in the past few weeks and months, but it looks like we have official confirmation now. Variety reports that Wonder Woman 1984, which has seen a number of delays due to COVID-19, will officially debut on HBO Max on Christmas Day, Dec. 25th, in the US — the same day that the film will premiere in movie theaters.

For international audiences, the film will still play in theaters, though exact dates weren’t made available. Of course, the Gal Gadot-led superhero sequel was intended to hit theaters much, much sooner, but the ongoing pandemic, and the resulting theater closures frequently forced Warner Bros. and other movie studios to rethink their release schedules and overall strategies.

We’ve seen other big-budget films head for streaming services this year, including the live-action remake of Mulan, which was made available on Disney+ via “Premier Access” pricing of $29.99 on top of the standard streaming service fees. In this case, however, Wonder Woman 1984 will be available at no added cost to HBO Max subscribers and it’ll be interesting to see how much of a driver the much-anticipated film can be for the relatively young streaming service.
