When Netflix released their second quarter earnings report, the company noted that without those expensive series, there will be money in the budget that can be reallocated for original programming.
“Much of our domestic, and eventually global, Disney catalog, as well as ‘Friends,’ ‘The Office,’ and some other licensed content will wind down over the coming years, freeing up budget for more original content,” the statement said.
For reference, Netflix was paying $100 million for rights to stream Friends and were willing to spend $90 million to keep The Office. Disney content was taking up another $150 million, according to a report from CNBC.
With many more streaming services set to launch in the second half of 2019 and into early 2020, Netflix could maintain their audience by providing original content that can’t be found elsewhere.
