Will Another Disney+ Show Be Moved to Hulu? Lizzie McGuire Could Be Next

Earlier this week, Hulu shared the news that a Love, Victor, a Love, Simon spinoff series, would be making its debut on Hulu rather than airing on Disney+ as originally planned. Disney reportedly felt that the more mature themes of alcohol use, sexuality, and family issues would be better suited to Hulu.

Before that, High Fidelity, starring Zoe Kravitz was also moved to Hulu for its premiere, after originally being slated for Disney+.

Now, yet another series could be getting the same treatment. We reported last month that the Lizzie McGuire revival was put on hold when the series showrunner dropped out. “Fans have a sentimental attachment to ‘Lizzie McGuire’ and high expectations for a new series,” a Disney rep said in a statement for Variety. “After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show.”

Hilary Duff, the star of Disney’s Lizzie McGuire series and the upcoming revival, and showrunner Terri Minsky wanted to use the new series to give fans a realistic look at what Lizzie’s life would look like as a 30 year old navigating real life. After the first two episodes were filmed, the company chose to take the show in a different direction, ultimately resulting in Minsky being removed from the showrunner role.

After news of the Love, Victor move came out this week, Duff took to Instagram to ask Disney to move her series to Hulu, just as they did for Love, Victor and High Fidelity.

“Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains,” Duff wrote in her Instagram post. “However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with Lizzie who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

Disney has repeatedly said that Hulu will be the home of content with adult themes while Disney+ will remain a family friendly platform. The Lizzie reboot, following the life of the now 30 something main character, could be the next series to find a home on Hulu if the show’s star has a say.
