Why Can’t You Watch Quibi on Your TV? A New Feature Could Make it Possible Soon

When Quibi launched last week, one of the most common complaints was that the content can only be viewed on mobile devices. The streaming service was designed to be mobile-only, being promoted as a way to stay entertained on the go, in between other activities throughout the day. Now, Quibi’s CEO says we could soon be able to watch on larger screens.

While the app was specifically made for mobile, Gizmodo reports that prior to launching, Quibi’s CEO, Meg Whitman, said it would “be listening to our users after launch about how and where they’d like to consume the Quibi shows.” The user response showed that people want the option to watch on the screen of their choice, rather than being tied to their phones.

Whitman says the company had been working on an update to allow for casting content, but that Quibi will “accelerate” that feature now.

“We’re talking to the engineering team about—we had always planned to cast to your TV—so we’re going to see if we can accelerate that in the engineering roadmap,” Whitman told CNBC’s Squawk on the Street. “We’ll eventually get there but it was never a part of the launch. If we’d known about [covid-19], maybe it would have been.”

Quibi has reported 1.7 million app downloads within its first week, with 300,000 on day one. Will responding to this subscriber request and allowing users to watch the service’s “quick bites” on larger screens boost those numbers? It looks like we could find out sooner than expected.
