Which Streaming Services Are Most Popular During Coronavirus?

Spring 2020 has been an unprecedented time for streaming to say the least. With most of America working from home and being stuck at home during downtime, streaming media consumption is at an all-time high.

Since people are streaming more than ever, it’s a good time to take a look at just how they’re doing it. Does Netflix still reign? How much of a market share does Amazon have? Is Disney+ a threat to anyone? Let’s take a look. 

This data comes courtesy of Reelgood, and covers several weeks from late March to early April 2020. It’s no surprise that the king of streaming, Netflix, takes the crown for the most usage at 41%, nearly doubling their closest competitor. Amazon Prime Video accounted for 22% of use, and Hulu comes in third place with 17%.   

After the top three, viewership drops off in a hurry and the scene becomes much more fragmented with Disney+ only accounting for 4%. But, given that Reelgood is an app geared towards adults and a huge portion of Disney+ traffic is parents streaming straight from a smart TV or smartphone, their “real world” usage almost certainly has a higher percentage. 

Tubi is next with just under 4%, and even though we’re still in the top 5 most used apps, more than 85% of streaming time is accounted for. HBO, Apple TV+, IMDB TV, Sony Crackle, Vudu and PopcornFlix finish up the list, with each one making up about 1 to 2%. 

What’s the takeaway? It’s interesting to note that ReelGood is an app designed for people who have multiple streaming services and who likely aren’t averse to trying new services. And while the smaller players get a little attention, the big names in the industry stand on top by a wide margin. 

If this data could somehow include every single person that streamed content, there’s a good chance some of the percentages would be noticeably different (Disney+ mainly), but it’s also likely that Netflix and Amazon would still take the majority of eyeballs.
