Which Oscar Nominated Film Would Win Best Picture if Based on Viewership

The 94th Academy Awards are just around the corner (Sunday, March 27), and the nomination list is stacked with some powerful movies all vying for Best Picture. Unlike other Award categories, all Academy members get to submit nominations for Best Picture, making it an extra honor to be chosen.

Obviously there are a lot of variables factored into who the winner actually is, but Samba TV has pulled data on which 2022 nominee would win Best Picture if the decision was based on streaming popularity.

The results? Netflix’s Don’t Look Up would win the title of Best Picture for 2022 since it had the highest viewership out of all 10 nominees. Don’t Look Up had nearly double the viewership of the second runner-up, Dune, premiering to 10.3M households and 5.3M households respectively. The satirical apocalyptic film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep and more set records with 152 million hours watched in its first week and is currently the Netflix’s second most popular film ever based on hours viewed in it’s first 28 days.

Netflix’s Original The Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch is in third place in terms of viewership, however, Nightmare Alley has been picking up traction with the most total viewership since nominations were announced.
