Cord Cutters News recently conducted a survey of more than 1,100 of our readers to determine the best free ad-supported streaming services available today. The results show that The Roku Channel has once again emerged as the clear favorite among participants.
According to the survey findings, The Roku Channel received 30.9 percent of the vote, securing the top spot. Pluto TV and Tubi followed in a very close race for second and third place. Pluto TV garnered 24.2 percent of the votes, while Tubi received 23.8 percent. This narrow margin highlights the strong competition between these two established platforms.
A notable 11.5 percent of respondents indicated that they do not use any free streaming services. The remaining votes were distributed quite evenly among a variety of other free ad-supported options, suggesting a broad but fragmented field of alternatives that appeal to different segments of the audience.
The popularity of these services reflects the ongoing shift in how consumers access entertainment. As more households move away from traditional cable and satellite subscriptions, free ad-supported streaming services have become an attractive option. These platforms provide access to a wide range of movies, television shows, and live programming without requiring monthly subscription fees, though viewers do encounter commercial interruptions. The model allows users to enjoy premium content at no upfront cost while generating revenue through targeted advertising, which in turn supports the acquisition of additional titles and the expansion of libraries. This balance has proven especially appealing to budget-conscious viewers seeking flexibility in their viewing habits.
The Roku Channel has built a significant following since its introduction. Launched by Roku in September 2017, the service started as a way for content owners to distribute their material directly on Roku devices without developing separate applications. Over time, it expanded beyond the Roku ecosystem to become available on multiple platforms, including web browsers, smart televisions, and mobile devices. Pluto TV pioneered much of the early development in the free ad-supported streaming space. Founded in 2013 by Tom Ryan, Ilya Pozin, and Nick Grouf, the service officially launched in 2014 with a focus on linear channels that mimic the experience of traditional broadcast and cable television. Viewers can flip through hundreds of curated channels featuring news, movies, sports, and niche programming. The platform gained significant traction and was acquired by Viacom in 2019 for $340 million, later becoming part of Paramount Global. This backing allowed Pluto TV to expand its content library and international reach while maintaining its free, ad-supported model. The linear approach has remained a key differentiator, giving audiences the feeling of channel surfing without the need for a cable box or antenna.
Tubi entered the market around the same time as Pluto TV. The service launched on April 1, 2014, in San Francisco, founded by Farhad Massoudi and Thomas Ahn Hicks. Unlike Pluto TV’s emphasis on live linear channels, Tubi has primarily focused on a vast on-demand library of movies and television episodes across numerous genres. The platform was acquired by Fox Corporation in 2020 for $440 million, which provided additional resources for content acquisition and original programming development. Tubi has grown to feature one of the largest catalogs among free ad-supported services, appealing to viewers who prefer choosing specific titles rather than channel surfing. Its extensive selection includes everything from Hollywood blockbusters and independent films to popular TV series, all available instantly at no cost to the user beyond watching advertisements.
The survey results underscore the diversity of preferences among cord cutters. Some users favor the familiar feel of linear television offered by Pluto TV, while others appreciate the extensive on-demand selection available on Tubi. The Roku Channel strikes a balance that resonates with many, combining accessibility and content variety. With the streaming landscape continuing to evolve, free ad-supported services are expected to play an increasingly important role in how audiences consume media. The even distribution of votes among other services indicates that no single platform dominates entirely, leaving room for innovation and competition in the years ahead. As more content providers explore ad-supported models and as technology improves delivery across devices, these services will likely continue to gain traction, offering sustainable entertainment options for a wide demographic of viewers who value both choice and affordability.
