What is Roku?
A Roku is a device that allows you to stream free and paid content to your TV through the internet. With a Roku device, you access the Roku Channel Store where you choose the apps, again both paid and free, that you’ll use to watch TV, listen to music, and even play games.
After connecting your device, you’ll sign up for a Roku account to activate the device. Then, you can start to explore the thousands of options for streaming content available.
Since Roku hit the market in 2008, the number of streaming services bringing content to cord cutters has grown exponentially. One reason for the popularity of the Roku is that the vast majority of those streaming services are available with Roku devices.

What are Roku Channels?
Roku compares their Channel Store to an app store on your phone. When you visit the Channel Store on your computer or through your Roku device, you’ll find a list of “channels” to browse. These are apps for your TV. You’ll find big names like Netflix and Prime Video, as well as smaller and more niche channels.
In the Channel Store, you’ll also find The Roku Channel. This is another app that you can add to your Roku. With it, you’ll have access to free, live, and premium TV. In addition to free content offered through the channel, you can also use it to manage your paid premium channel subscriptions like HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime.
What Extra Costs Will I See?
It’s important to mention that using a Roku doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have a 100% free streaming experience.
Roku does not charge a monthly fee, you won’t pay an activation fee, and you won’t be charged for creating an account.
In the Channel Store, you’ll find many free apps that won’t require a paid subscription to watch. You’ll also find channels that will require a paid subscription. Keep in mind that to use those channels, you’ll have to pay for a monthly subscription through that streaming service.
Do I Need a Separate Device in Each Room?
A Roku device is made to work with one TV at a time. You can move your Roku device from one room to another to watch TV in different spaces, or you can buy a separate device for each TV.
