Netflix isn’t finished with Nevermore Academy just yet. According to IndieWire, Wednesday has officially been renewed for a third season, well ahead of the second season’s debut this August. The Addams Family-inspired hit will return with Season 2, Part 1 premiering August 6, followed by Part 2 on September 3.
Jenna Ortega reprises her role as the sharp-witted Wednesday Addams, and this time she’s back not just as a star, but also as a producer. Tim Burton, who directed four episodes in Season 1, remains on board as executive producer. The show’s second season was filmed in Ireland and promises to lean more into horror while stepping away from romantic subplots, something Ortega herself reportedly pushed for.
Series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are also returning, and they’ve hinted at even more Addams Family spinoffs down the line. “There are other characters we can look at,” Gough told The Hollywood Reporter.
A Viral Hit With a Growing Cast
The new season introduces a host of fresh faces including Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, and even Lady Gaga in a still-undisclosed role. Returning cast members like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán have been promoted to series regulars, while Christina Ricci, who portrayed the original Wednesday in the 1990s films, remains a fan favorite in her new role.
When it first premiered in 2022, Wednesday broke Netflix records with 341 million hours watched in a single week, became a TikTok dance sensation, and even sparked a resurgence of Gothic fashion among Gen Z. According to Netflix content chief Bela Bajaria, “People watched it again and again and brought their parents into it.”
No Beetlejuice 3 Without Burton
As IndieWire also reports, fans hoping to see Ortega and Burton team up again for a third Beetlejuice movie may be out of luck. Burton shot down the idea, saying, “It took 35 years to make the second one… I’ll be 105 by the time there’s a third.” Ortega echoed the sentiment, saying she wouldn’t join another installment without Burton, calling the idea “a tad disrespectful.”
With Season 3 now officially on the way, Wednesday shows no signs of losing steam. Whether you’re a longtime Addams Family fan or new to the macabre charm, this modern reimagining continues to cast a spell over viewers.
