For years now there has been a growing number of websites and YouTube channels that promote piracy. They may not host the piracy or even own the services they cover but they promote piracy as a way to watch content. Now the Danish Supreme Court has upheld a prison sentence against the operator of a site that promoted the piracy service Popcorn Time according to a report from TorrentFreak. The site did not run Popcorn Time or host it but promoted it with detailed how-to guides. Now thanks to the Danish Supreme Court that may be enough to make you liable for the piracy activity in the EU. This dramatically changes the rules on liability for piracy and could put many EU YouTubers who promote piracy in the crosshairs. The question now is will the United States follow the EU’s example in going after not only those who run the services but also those who profit by promoting piracy. If that happens it could put thousands of creators and websites at new legal risk. 2020 is shaping up to be a year when both governments and content owners pay even more attention to online piracy. Long gone are the days where Torrenting was the main source of piracy. Increasingly, services and websites promote both free and paid programs that offer access to content.
