Warning: I Wouldn’t Buy an Apple TV Right Now

It looks like we are just a few weeks away from a 5th gen Apple TV coming out in September 2017. Multiple news reports, including one from Bloomberg, are confirming that an Apple TV with 4K and HDR will be released in September, and we are hearing it could be as soon as September 12, 2017.

I would like to encourage all of my readers who are thinking about buying an Apple TV to hold off until the new one comes out. Apple has a long history of not supporting older versions of the Apple TV after a newer model is released. It would not surprise me that within a year or so new apps will no longer come to the 4th gen Apple TV or updates and new features will soon only be for the 5th gen Apple TV.

Why do I say they don’t support the older model Apple TV? Well the 3rd Gen Apple TV is more than capable of supporting the Apple TV app store but they never updated the older model to support it. Greatly limiting the number of apps the 3rd Gen Apple TV supports. With that history, I would encourage you to wait until the new Apple TV comes out in a few weeks. If a device is not giving you access to the newest services I don’t consider it to be supported anymore.

The current Apple TV is also still selling for well over $100 for an HD-only player. You can buy a similarly powered Roku HD stick for just $39.99, so I would suggest waiting for the 4K HDR Apple TV in a few weeks. Nothing is worse than spending $150+ for a new streaming player only for it to become obsolete just a few weeks later. (Maybe even before it gets delivered to your house.)

Once again if you want an Apple TV wait for the 5th gen Apple TV to come out. According to all reports it will be a major step forward.
