Warner Music Group (WMG) has announced the acquisition of a controlling stake in Tempo Music Investments, a leading investment platform for premium music rights. The acquisition, made from Providence Equity Partners, expands WMG’s portfolio of music rights and strengthens its position in the music publishing and investment landscape.
Tempo was launched in 2019 as a joint venture between WMG and Providence Equity Partners. The platform combines Providence’s investment expertise with WMG’s deep industry knowledge and resources to support and build value around music rights. Tempo has amassed a diverse catalog of music rights, focusing on empowering artists and songwriters while delivering strong financial returns.
“By acquiring Tempo’s impressive catalog, we’re expanding Warner Chappell’s reach, bringing rights from songwriters we currently don’t represent, as well as additional rights from songwriters with whom we’re already partners,” said Guy Moot, Co-Chair and CEO of Warner Chappell Music, the global music publishing arm of WMG. “Tempo has assembled a thoughtful, well-rounded catalog and I’m excited to dig into new opportunities and unlock more value for these songs.”
The acquisition is expected to be accretive for WMG, generating additional revenue and expanding the scope of its administration and distribution activities. “This deal is a natural fit for us, and a good example of how our investment strategy is designed to build our scale and influence, while delivering additional revenue at a high margin,” said Michael Ryan-Southern, WMG’s EVP and Chief Corporate Development Officer.
Providence Equity Partners, while selling its controlling stake, will remain a minority investor in Tempo and continue to collaborate with WMG in an advisory capacity. “The Tempo team has built a high-quality catalog over the years with top artists and songwriters, and has benefitted from a close partnership with WMG since its foundation,” said Michael Dominguez, Senior Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer at Providence. “This is an exciting next step in the company’s evolution and a natural home for its catalog. We look forward to continuing to work with WMG and to support Tempo’s next phase of growth.”
Tempo’s catalog includes music rights from a variety of prominent songwriters and artists, including:
- Tyler Joseph: Songwriter for Twenty One Pilots
- Wiz Khalifa: Multi-platinum-selling recording artist
- Florida Georgia Line: Popular country music duo
- Brett James and Shane McAnally: Grammy Award-winning songwriters
- Jonas Brothers, Ben Rector, and Korn: Popular music artists
- Mia Fieldes: Singer-songwriter
- Philip Lawrence: Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer known for his work with Bruno Mars and Adele
- Malay: Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer who has collaborated with Frank Ocean
- Jeff Bhasker: Grammy Award-winning artist, songwriter, and producer
This acquisition strengthens WMG’s position in the music publishing and investment sector, further diversifying its revenue streams and expanding its reach across various genres and artists. The deal highlights the growing importance of music rights ownership and management in the evolving music industry, as streaming and digital platforms continue to reshape how music is consumed and monetized. WMG’s strategic investment in Tempo reflects its commitment to building a comprehensive music company that can adapt to the changing dynamics of the industry and capitalize on new opportunities for growth.
