Walmart’s Bold 2025 Overhaul: Remodeling 650 Stores to Rival Amazon in Retail and Streaming – Here Are The Stores Walmart Will Start With

Walmart is launching an aggressive strategy to redefine retail and compete head-to-head with Amazon, announcing plans to remodel over 650 stores across 47 U.S. states and Puerto Rico in 2025 as part of its “Stores of the Future” initiative. This massive undertaking, coupled with the recent $2.3 billion acquisition of TV manufacturer Vizio, positions Walmart to dominate not only physical retail but also e-commerce, streaming, and connected TV advertising, challenging Amazon’s Fire TV ecosystem and Prime services.

The “Stores of the Future” project aims to transform the shopping experience with modernized layouts, expanded product selections, and cutting-edge technology to enhance convenience. Key upgrades include bold signage, increased online pickup and delivery capacity, and revamped pharmacy layouts with wider aisles and private screening rooms. Walmart is also prioritizing sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient equipment, lower-impact refrigerants, and electric vehicle fast-charging stations. These remodels are expected to create tens of thousands of jobs, boosting local economies while reinforcing Walmart’s commitment to American communities.

In addition to store upgrades, Walmart’s acquisition of Vizio, finalized in December 2024, marks a bold move into the connected TV (CTV) space. By integrating Vizio’s SmartCast platform, which boasts over 19 million active accounts, Walmart aims to expand its Walmart Connect advertising business. This positions Walmart to compete directly with Amazon’s Fire TV and Prime Video, leveraging Vizio’s ad-supported streaming and first-party data to offer brands targeted advertising opportunities. Analysts see this as a game-changer, enabling Walmart to attract CTV budgets and provide end-to-end shoppable experiences, similar to Amazon’s model.

Walmart’s strategy also emphasizes e-commerce growth, with remodeled stores serving as fulfillment hubs to streamline online orders and deliveries. This omnichannel approach mirrors Amazon’s but leverages Walmart’s 4,600+ physical stores—a scale Amazon cannot match. The retailer’s geospatial delivery technology and private labels like Bettergoods further enhance its competitive edge, particularly in groceries, where Walmart maintains market leadership.

While Walmart has shared a partial list of 104 stores slated for remodeling in North Carolina, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, the full list of 650+ locations remains undisclosed. Below is the confirmed list of stores:
