Walmart’s ‘$4.08’ 5G Wireless Plan From MobileX is Available at Nearly 1,000 Stores

After launching in Walmart last month, prepaid wireless service provider MobileX is now available at nearly 1,000 stores across the U.S.

The company made headlines last month by offering a “$4.08 a month” plan that seemingly undercut all other competitors. We break down the ins and outs of the plan, and what you actually get, here.

The milestone represents a step forward for the upstart wireless reseller, which leases capacity off of Verizon’s network to deliver its service. MobileX CEO and founder Peter Adderton told Cord Cutters News earlier this month that he’s on a mission to educate consumers on how much data they actually use, and why they’re paying too much for traditional unlimited data plans.

Adderton isn’t new to the mobile business, having founded Boost Mobile in Australia in 2000 and creating the U.S. version a year later, which ultimately got purchased first by Sprint, and is now owned by Dish Network.

In a statement on Tuesday, Adderton touted the kind of real estate MobileX is getting at Walmart.

“Partnering with one of America’s most beloved and well-known retail brands, Walmart, is an extraordinary milestone for MobileX. In my experience, it’s been unprecedented that a new brand gets an endcap in the largest Walmarts so early on,” Adderton said, with endcap referring to the slot at the front of an aisle that gets the most visibility.

MobileX also offers an unlimited plan, including a 5 GB one for $14.88, but the carrier will throttle you to dial-up modem speeds if you exceed your limit. The service also offers an artificial intelligence system that scans your usage patterns in the first 10 days and refers you to the best plan, which you can customize and change on the fly.
