Walmart Announces More Store Closures

Walmart announced another underperforming store shutdown, this time a location in Overland Park, Kansas.

Walmart states this Neighborhood Market location, which opened in 2003, “hasn’t performed as well as we’d hoped”. The pharmacy will be closing on May 26th and the rest of the store will fully close its doors on June 2nd, 2023.

The company will be offering employee transfers to the nine full Walmart stores and two Neighborhood Markets still profitably open in Overland Park. Employees who decline a transfer will be offered a severance package.

All year, the retail giant has been closing stores locations it says are losing tens of millions of dollars a year. Walmart is going through each store in great detail as part of a massive cost-cutting procedure. It announced dozens of store closures last month alone, and there’s no official word yet that Walmart is done reviewing all locations.

More closures could be on their way as Walmart rolls back on brick-and-mortar stores, shifting more focus to online ordering and deliveries.
