MGM owns the rights to iconic films like James Bond, Rocky, RoboCop, Pink Panther, 21 Jump Street, and The Hobbit. MGM also has a large library of TV shows including “Stargate SG-1,” “Vikings,” “Fargo,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Get Shorty,” “Fame,” “Teen Wolf” and “In the Heat of the Night.”
Vudu’s Movies On Us free streaming service first launched two years ago and already offers over 3,000 movies and TV shows. This new partnership with MGM should help expand their library of free movies and TV shows.
This all comes a few months after it was reported that Walmart plans to launch an on-demand subscription streaming services to take on Netflix. Walmart is hoping to expand outside of their traditional big box retail stores. Right now, Walmart is seeing more competition from places like Amazon and cheaper stores like Dollar General. This has been eating into Walmart’s growth and profits.
Walmart already has experience in online streaming. In 2010, Walmart purchased Vudu and has used their existing stores to push the service. Now Walmart is hoping that a new subscription video service and expanded free streaming will help them grow past their current big box store market.
