Walmart is Reportedly Working on a Netflix Like Streaming Service

Online movie stream with mobile device. Man watching film on tablet with imaginary video player service.Walmart for some time now has had their Vudu streaming service. Now it is being reported that Walmart is working on an $8 a month or less streaming service to take on Netflix.

This information comes from sources who talked with The Information. According to that information Walmart is hoping to take on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. The goal is likely to build off of the success they have had with Vudu. There is a reason to wonder if this service will ever see the light of day.

One confusing thing with the report is that Walmart is also looking into launching an ad-supported streaming service. Well, Walmart has already had an ad-supported video streaming service now for over a year with Vudu. Currently, you can watch both movies and TV shows on Vudu for free as long as you are willing to watch ads. It is possible that Walmart is looking into launching a stand-alone ad-supported video service breaking it away from Vudu, but the way it was reported makes it sound like this would be something new that Walmart has never done before.

As always with these leaks, it is important to remember that many companies look at doing many things. Often though the server never becomes a reality and dies on the drawing board. Though it would be very interesting to see if Walmart could jump into what is already a very overcrowded market and make a name for themselves. You do have to wonder if even Walmart can overcome the growing number of original programming and content deals that Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon have right now.
