Walmart Drops Plans for a Netflix Competitor

Male hand holding TV remote control.Yesterday, we learned that Walmart ended its push to launch a Netflix-like on-demand streaming service. Instead, Walmart plans to focus more on their Vudu service rather than expanding into a new on-demand service.

“Vudu has developed a strong platform, and we aim to continue to bring our customers more content, on more devices, at the best possible price,” says Walmart spokeswoman Tara Raddohl-House.

In the middle of 2018, there were multiple reports of a Netflix-like service aimed at middle America. Early reports said that the service would launch by the end of 2018, but things quickly cooled down around the fourth quarter of 2018 and the service never launched.

Now reports say that after talking with executives with experience in the industry, Walmart has decided to walk away from their planned Netflix-like service.

So, what will happen with Vudu? For now, we will have to wait and see, but look for Vudu to continue to grow in the months and years to come.
