VUDU is Coming to The Apple TV

It looks like VUDU, the video store/streaming service, is coming to the Apple TV.

VUDU is a Walmart-owned and run streaming service that competes with services such as iTunes and Amazon Video. It not only sells and rents movies and sells TV shows but it also offers a collection of movies to stream for free with ads.

For some time now people have wanted VUDU to come to devices such as the Apple TV and the Fire TV but as of today you need an Android TV or a Roku device to watch Vudu on your big TV.

In a post on the Vudu forums a Vudu engineer explained the reasoning behind VUDU not prioritizing an Apple TV app. He mentioned Apple’s strict policies preventing third-parties from selling movies in their apps. The VUDU engineer said instead Vudu is focused on adding HD AirPlay streaming into its iOS app so users can use the company’s mobile app to stream all of their content to Apple TV. It’s believed that these rules have also prevented VUDU from coming to Amazon devices such as the Fire TV.

Well now that seems to all change as the same VUDU engineer who explained the reason they are not on the Apple TV says it is in the works in their forumsYes, it’s in development. No, please don’t ask me for a date, I don’t know.”

So the good news is it is coming, but we still have a lot of questions. Will this be a stripped down version maybe just offering access to the free content and what you own but not allowing you to buy new content? (Will it be similar to the Amazon Video app on iPads.)

Only time will tell, but it seems as though soon Apple TV owners will have one more app in their app store.
