VidAngel Hit with $62.4 Million Judgement for Piracy & Is Looking at Bankruptcy

VidAngel was a service that, in the past, allowed subscribers to watch edited versions of movies for as little as $1. You would be able to watch a movie free from language, sex, or other filters you wanted to avoid.

Back in 2017, VidAngel relaunched as a service that filters Netflix, HBO, and Amazon streams. Now VidAngel was just hit with a $62.4 million judgment for pirating movies from Disney, FOX, and Warner Bros. The court ruled that VidAngel did not have rights to stream the movies on its service without permission.

“We disagree with today’s ruling and have not lessened our resolve to save filtering for families one iota. VidAngel plans to appeal the District Court ruling and explore options in the bankruptcy court. Our court system has checks and balances, and we are pursuing options on that front as well.” –VidAngel CEO Neal Harmon

The ruling is a very likely a death blow to the company as VidAngel is already in bankruptcy in Utah. If the ruling is upheld it could force the company into liquidation.

For now, VidAngel’s streaming service is still live and in the short term it sounds like VidAngel plans to continue to offer the service. What happens next is likely up to the bankruptcy court.
