ViacomCBS Will Launch a Global Streaming Service in 2021

ViacomCBS has announced plans to launch a global streaming service next year. In a quarter 2 earnings call today, ViacomCBS expanded on plans that had been hinted at earlier this year, now sharing that it will be a “super-sized selection of ‘must-see’ exclusives, premieres and box-sets from ViacomCBS’s much-loved entertainment brands.”

The new service is set to roll out in early 2021, with exclusive premieres of Showtime series, CBS All Access originals, and content from ViacomCBS’ collection of networks including Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Paramount Network, as well as originals from ViacomCBS International Studios in some markets.

The service will be available on-demand with content for all ages, featuring a library of blockbuster and classic movies, premium scripted series, kids, comedy and entertainment, reality and “specialist factual content” with a goal to “match or exceed” competitor services by offering thousands of hours of content.

“Launching a super-sized premium streaming service will be a game-changer for ViacomCBS and can help us become as powerful a player in international streaming as we are in linear TV,” said David Lynn, President and CEO of ViacomCBS Networks International. “We will market a world-class content offering at a very competitive price, and we’re convinced it will have significant appeal for audiences everywhere and strong growth potential in every market.”

The new service will first launch in Australia, Latin America, and Nordic countries. It will use the technology and platform that powers CBS All Access, and will roll out alongside Pluto TV, the company’s free streaming service that has already expanded to Latin American countries along with the UK and Germany.

More details, including the name of the new “super-service” will be given closer to launch.
