“Verizon is on track to be the first wireless technology provider to deploy 5G residential broadband service and 5G mobile service in the United States. The company expects home internet installations to begin in Indianapolis, Houston, Los Angeles and Sacramento in the second half of 2018. As mobile devices become available in early 2019, Verizon plans to quickly move to be first in 5G mobile service.” Verizon said in a statement on their site.
Exact details on pricing, launch date, and more have yet to be announced. According to multiple reports, you will have to pick if you want the Apple TV or YouTube TV with your Verizon 5G subscription. Exactly how long the free YouTube TV will be is still unknown right now.
So what is 5G?
5G is the fifth generation of mobile technology. We’ve seen the technology improve, starting with 2G in the 90s, and this generation will build on that technology, with some major changes. While we’ll all still have the ability to make calls, send texts, and browse the web with our devices, we’ll also see a huge increase in the speed of data being sent and received across the network to handle things like 4K streaming.
The real selling point of 5G is the fact that it is primarily being built to replace your current home internet service. 5G will offer fiber speeds to your home without the need to physically run a fiber line. That will cut the cost and time of rolling out fiber across the United States.
