Bloomberg reported yesterday that Verizon Communications Inc. has been securing streaming rights from television network owners for a nationwide launch of a live online TV service, according to people familiar with the matter.
Verizon’s service is aimed to take on their main competitors Dish and AT&T with their Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW streaming service and even PlayStation Vue. The live, over-the-internet TV service would be a first for Verizon — separate from go90, a YouTube-like streaming-video service aimed at teens — and also independent of its FiOS home TV offer, accourding to Bloomberg’s sources.
Right now it seems like no one wants to be the last one in on live TV streaming. With Hulu, Comcast, and even YouTube all planning to launch a live TV streaming service. Soon cord cutters will have over 10 live TV streaming services to pick from.
We currently do not know channel lineups or other package details as Comcast has yet to make an official announcement of the service.
