“This project is providing a critical communications investment in some truly rural areas of West Virginia,” West Virginia State Director Kris Warner said in a statement. “Through USDA’s ReConnect program, these counties will get access to the latest broadband technology. This will have a positive economic impact for the farms, small businesses and families that live in these communities.”
The next day, the USDA said they were adding $7.1 million to that number, for two more projects that will provide the ability to bring high speed broadband access to rural Arkansas.
The USDA’s ReConnect Loan and Grant Program “furnishes loans and grants to provide funds for the costs of construction, improvement, or acquisition of facilities and equipment needed to provide broadband service in eligible rural areas.” To date, the USDA has invested $343,429,703 in high-speed broadband infrastructure which will create or improve rural e-Connectivity for rural customers across 22 states.
Since the beginning of this year, the USDA has given $23 million to rural North Dakota communities, $48 million to rural Virginia communities, $11 million to rural Minnesota and Iowa communities, and $5.7 million in rural Nebraska communities for this latest round of funding in West Virginia and Arkansas.
