Univision Is “Probably” Not Coming Back to Sling TV

Authentic scrambled reception on a TV screenThis week, DISH announced their second quarter 2018 earnings, which ended up being better than expected. Yet there was one thing that was kind of hidden in all the news of how well DISH and Sling TV did. Univision is likely not coming back to DISH or Sling TV.

During the DISH earnings call, Chairman Charlie Ergen answered a question about the future of Univision. In the call, Ergen said, “The short answer is yes, this is probably an inflection point. I believe this one, personally, is probably permanent.”

DISH has repeatedly said that the blackout is caused by Univision asking for a 75% price hike. According to DISH, “ratings for its flagship Univision channel have declined nearly 40 percent since 2012.” DISH reps went on to say, “Despite the direct-to-consumer Univision Now app costing $7.99 per month, Univision is asking DISH to pay almost double that amount for its DishLATINO and Sling Latino customers to watch the same content.”

Univision sent the following statement to Cord Cutters News:

We remain ready and willing to negotiate with DISH, but we will not roll over and let them continue to devalue the programming our already-underrepresented community relies on. Given the fact that our networks perform extremely well on their service, the question becomes: why doesn’t DISH treat Univision fairly?

We will have to wait and see, but don’t look for Univision to return to Sling TV anytime soon.
