New reports are saying that Twitter is in talks with major streaming players such as Apple TV and likely even Roku, Fire TV, and Android TV. This deal will bring a streaming app full of their video content. This would allow users of these apps to access NFL, NBC, and Pac-12 games on their TV through Twitter on their TV.
“Having that live programming every night when sports are playing — with no paywall, no logging in and directly from the source — that’s key to us,” said Anthony Noto, the chief financial officer for Twitter and formerly for the NFL, who helped forge the streaming deal.
Twitter also live streams other content—from political conventions to Bloomberg TV—you can access on Twitter 100% free but for now you need a computer to access the streams.
For now there is no set timeline for an app. What we have learned over the years is major companies, such as Twitter, will often work out the rights for an app on devices such as the Apple TV long before they make the app.
It is possible that a Twitter video app will be on major streaming players before the NFL season starts; however, I wouldn’t hold your breath. These talks often drag out for months.
