The live streaming platform Twitch is changing its subscription pricing model to reflect local prices. The streamer currently has a tier 1 monthly subscription equal to $4.99 a month globally, but most countries outside of the U.S. will see that price drop, beginning with Mexico and Turkey on May 20, 2021.
“Over the next few months, we’ll be adjusting the price of subscriptions (existing subs, new paid subs, and gift subs) in most countries to better align with their local cost of living,” Twitch said in a blog post.
“Mexico and Turkey will be followed by most countries in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe starting in Q3 2021. This gradual rollout will help the community adjust more smoothly to such an impactful change. We’ll continue to update the community as we ready more countries and regions for the price change rollout.”
Twitch says this new local pricing is driven by two main reasons, the first being viewers have voiced their desire to support creators and help grow their local communities regardless of where they live. Second, creators will benefit from the price drop since long-term subscriptions will be more affordable and ultimately attract more users.
Twitch is also rolling out a 12-month program that guarantees a certain level of revenue for eligible creators to help them adapt to the new pricing model without losing any money.
