Top 5 Cord Cutting Stories to Watch for in December 2018

Cutting the cable connection to coax connector illustrating people cancelling cable TV serviceDecember promises to be a big month for cord cutting. There is a long list of promised cord cutting news. Today we look at the top five cord cutting stories to watch for in December 2018.

DIRECTV NOW 100 Hour DVR

This one may or may not happen because AT&T has missed several deadlines already for their new DVR. Yet AT&T has announced plans to release an extended 100+ hour DVR in the United States. Right now, with your DIRECTV NOW subscription you get 20 hours of free DVR. The plan is to offer extra DVR storage as an add-on. Keep an eye on this. It could be released in December.

T-Mobile TV

T-Mobile has promised to launch their TV service by the end of 2018. Now this will likely be a home version with the stream anywhere version promised sometime in 2019. Keep an eye on this, T-Mobile is known to disrupt markets with their streaming service.

DIRECTV NOW’s Streaming Player

Back in November DIRECTV NOW started sending a new streaming player to a few lucky subscribers. The new player is an Android TV-based player that will load directly into DIRECTV NOW just like Sling does with their Air TV player.

AT&T has a history of long, slow beta tests for DIRECTV NOW. This time though they seem to be in a rush to get the device to market. Look for it to hit markets this December.

T-Mobile 5G

T-Mobile has also promised to launch 5G home internet in 2018. So far, no dates have been set but keep a close eye on this because Verizon already is offering home internet starting at $50 for 300+ Mbps down with no data cap. Hopefully, T-Mobile offers a similar plan as they start to roll out their home internet service.

Walmart’s New Streaming Service

For some time now there have been reports that by the end of 2018 Walmart will launch a new streaming service to take on Netflix. News about this has recently died down. Keep an eye on this though because Walmart could roll out their new streaming service at any time.
