Tom Hank’s new World War II movie Greyhound is now set to premiere on Apple TV+. This will be the first time for one of Hanks’ films to debut in streaming form instead of theater, and the largest movie to hit Apple TV+ so far. The film was originally set to open in theaters on Father’s Day weekend in June, but there’s no launch date announced for when it will hit streaming.
According to Deadline, the bidding war for this film drove the winning price up around $70 million range with Apple ultimately beating out competing streaming services for the win.
This is a big break for Apple TV+ as recently it’s been working on upping its content library. Having a big name movie and actor like this will no doubt boost viewership and visibility for the streaming service. It’s interesting that Sony chose to move Greyhound straight to streaming instead of a postponed theatrical debut like other films are doing, including MGM with James Bond: No Time to Die.
U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. Although this is Krause’s first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled in what would come to be known as the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history: The Battle of the Atlantic.
