Tivo Series 1 DVRs Are About to Stop Working

TivoDo you own a Tivo Series 1 DVR? They are about to stop working—even if you have paid for a lifetime subscription.

Tivo Series 1 DVRs are DVRs sold by TiVo between 1999 and 2002. They are now being shut off, leaving some to wonder how long Tivo’s lifetime subscription service is really good for.

If you do own a Series 1 DVR you should have received an email offering a $75 VISA prepaid card as an apology for the service shutting down on September 15, and you will have 14 days of program guides left that will run out on September 29, 2016.

At its core is Tivo’s sale to Rovi, and Rovi moving Tivos to their channel guide. Rovi and Tivo have decided that moving the older boxes are just not worth the cost.

With some of these DVRs being over 16 years old it is unlikely to affect many as a 16 year run for a product today is a good life span for any device.

For now the death of the Series 1 Tivo DVRs is a warning that all technology at some point gets left behind.
